What exactly is an AI answer in Google?
The block at the top of the results where Google answers the question itself, with a handful of sources underneath. Whoever is cited there is seen before anyone starts scrolling. Whoever is not, effectively does not exist for that searcher.
Is this the same as your AI scanner?
No, and the difference matters. The AI scanner asks questions to assistants like ChatGPT and checks whether you are named and recommended. This scan looks at the AI answers inside Google itself and measures whether your page is used as a source there.
Why am I not cited when I rank well?
Ranking high in the ordinary results and being cited in an AI answer are two different things. For the second, Google picks passages that answer a question directly. Pages that talk around the question are rarely quoted, however well they rank otherwise.
How fast does this change?
